UnityWeekly Focus: 11.13.11 - 11.19.11Starting in Large Group and continuing in Home Teams and CO3s this week, DC will be exploring Ephesians Chapter 4: 1-13. As we read this passage, four themes emerge: 1. Living up to our calling (vs. 1).2. Our unity in Christ (vs. 2-6).3. The Gift (Holy Spirit) that makes our unity a physical reality (vs. 7-10).4. Our spiritual gifts and their purpose (vs. 11-13).With that in mind, pray that God will open your heart and calm your mind as you interact in community this week. Spend time reading, praying, and meditating over the the Weekly Focus. Review by listening to the podcast. Share what God is teaching you in your CO3s and Home Teams. Most of all, live in Christ! That's the only way we can make a real difference in our lives and in the lives of the people around us.Weekly Focus:

CO2sCO2 is an abbreviation for "Church of 2". They are the smallest units of the church and are the heart of DC. Without this level of daily 1 on 1 Christ-focused community, DC is a hollow shell. Here’s the plan:1. Read the DC Weekly Focus passages beginning on Monday and continuing throughout the week. Don’t just read them once. Read the passages daily, asking God to show you something new each day. The Weekly Focus will be posted on the website and the DC Facebook page each week.2. Ask someone (same gender) from your community to be your CO2 partners. If you have two partners, one should be an encorager and mentor to you, the other partner should be someone that you can encourage and mentor.3. “Check in” with your partners daily at a pre-determined time and in a pre-determined way. The check-in must be conversational. Phone calls work well. So does Skype. Texting only works if it’s a text conversation where the partners respond back immediately. If your partners don't text you back in a timely manner, this doesn’t work. Choose the method that works for you and your partners. Just make sure it’s conversational.4. When you check-in, ask two simple questions:Q1. What is God teaching you in your circumstances today?Q2. What did God teach you in his Word today?5. Get together face-to-face once a week for lunch or coffee. Or maybe participate in a mutual activity or hobby. While you're together, take the time to "debrief" and share what God's been showing you over the past week. Share concerns and pray together. In CO2s, we ask these questions of one another because the Christian life was never intended to be “home study”. It’s a journey together. God wants to talk to me through you. And he has things to say to you through me. That’s the way the body of Christ works. When we isolate ourselves from one another and from God, life doesn’t work. Spiritual growth cannot happen. Do you want to understand God, yourself, and others better? Do you want real, meaningful, Christ-centered friendships?Get involved in a CO2. Without them, DC is just place we go on Sundays."Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." - Matthew 18:19-20 ESV
DC KidsOur DC Kids ministry is for infants through 5th grade and meets on Sunday mornings during Large Group. We believe it's important for parents and kids to worship together, so our 1st - 5th grade DC Kids join the adults for Large Group worship, 1st - 5th have their own actiivity packs that reinforce the Weekly Focus (and that Sunday's teaching). They can complete these packs in Large Group and take them home where parents and kids can discuss what was learned. Infant - preschool kids can be checked into their classes at the beginning of Large Group. They will find teachers happy to teach them about the basic truths of our faith in ways that they can embrace. With DC, our primary goal is to equip parents to be the primary disciplers of their kids.
Authority of ScriptureWe believe in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as verbally inspired of God and without error in the original writings. The exact meaning of the Scriptures is essentially unchanged in any important respect in the widely accepted English translations. The Scriptures are authoritative and without error in any category of knowledge, including science and history, and are of supreme and final authority in all matters about which they speak. We believe the Scriptures are to be interpreted in a normal and literal way and that they are understood as the believer is guided by the Spirit of God. Reference: John 6:27; Heb.1:8; Acts 5:3,4; Deut. 6:4; 2 Cor. 13:14; Matt 28:19; Is. 48:16Pre-eminence of Jesus ChristWe believe that God the Son became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, who was begotten by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, and who is true God and true man. Reference: John 1:14; Matt. 1:18-25; Matt. 26:38; John 11:33; John 8:40; Heb. 1:8; Heb. 2:14AtonementWe believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins as a substitutionary sacrifice and that all who believe in Him are declared righteous on the basis of His shed blood. Reference: 2 Cor. 5:14; Mark 10:45; Rom. 3:24-26; 1 Pet. 3:18; Rom. 5:8-9ResurrectionWe believe in the bodily resurrection of Christ, in His ascension into heaven, and in His present life there for us. Jesus now serves as high priest, intercessor, and advocate on our behalf with the Father. Reference: Rom. 1:4; John 20:25-27; I John 2:1; Heb. 7:25; Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9-11The Holy SpiritWe believe that the Holy Spirit is a person, possessing all the distinctively divine attributes. He is God. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He regenerates, seals, and sets apart the believer to a holy life. At regeneration, He baptizes the believer into the body of Christ and comes to indwell him permanently. Reference: 2 Cor. 2:10, 11; 12:11; Is. 40:13, 14; Ps. 139:7; Titus 3:5; John 3:5-7; 14:16-17; 16:8; Eph. 1:13; 2 Thess. 2:13; 1 Cor. 12:13; Rom. 8:9SinWe believe that man was created in the image of God and that he sinned and consequently experienced not only physical death but also spiritual death (which is separation from God). The consequences of this sin affect the entire human race. All human beings are born with a sinful nature, and in the case of those who reach moral responsibility, become sinners in thought, word, and deed. Reference: Gen. 1:26,27; 2:17, 3:6; Rom. 5:12-19; Eph. 2:1-3, 4:18; Mark 7:20-23; John 2:24,25SalvationWe believe that whoever by faith receives Jesus Christ as his Savior becomes a child of God. This salvation is not the result of any human effort or merit. Reference: John 1:12; Eph. 2:8,9; Rom. 3:28Eternal SecurityWe believe that all true believers are kept eternally secure by the power of God through the new birth, the indwelling and sealing of the Holy Spirit, and the intercession of Christ. Reference: John 10:28-30; 14:16,17; 1 Pet. 2:23; Eph. 4:30; 1 John 2:1; Rom. 8:38-39HealingWe believe that God heals, with or without means in answer to prayer offered in faith and in accord with His sovereign will. Reference: James 5:14,15; 1 John 5:14,15The ChurchWe believe that church is not a place; it is a people called by God. As such, the church includes all believers in every corner of the world. We believe that the purpose of the local church, in addition to building up every member of the body, is to make Christ known to the whole world. Every member of the body shares in this purpose. In relation to the world, believers are sent by Christ to communicate to pre-disciples that God is reconciling the world to Himself in Christ. This mission of reconciliation begins by living missonally, revealing Christ to the people he puts in our own social networks and spheres of influence. From here we are sent to the rest of the world, in order to fulfill the Great Commission. Reference 2: Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; 2 Cor. 5:18-20; John 17:18-20; Acts 1:8; Rom. 10:12-15; Is. 45:22, 49:6OrdinancesWe believe that Christ ordained the observance of water baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Communion) until He returns. Reference 1: Col. 1:18; Eph. 4:4-6; Acts 1:5, 11:15,16; 1 Cor. 12:13, 11:24-26; 1 Thess. 4:13-17; Matt. 16:18, 28:19Bodily ResurrectionWe believe in the bodily resurrection of all men. Believers are resurrected to enjoy life with God. Unbelievers are resurrected to experience judgment and then eternal suffering apart from God. Reference: 1 Cor. 15:52; 1 Thess. 4:16; Rev. 20:4-6; John 5:28-29; Dan. 12:2; Rev. 21:1-8SatanWe believe in the reality and personality of Satan, and that when given the opportunity, he attempts to defeat Christians. However, we believe Christians can overcome Satan’s schemes by applying Scriptural truth. Reference: Eph. 6:10-19; Luke 10:18; Job 1:6-12; John 8:44The Return of ChristWe believe in the imminent, personal return of Christ for the church. All members of the body of Christ, living and dead, will at that time be caught up to be with the Lord forever. Reference: 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor. 15:51-53; Titus 2:13EschatologyWe believe in the personal, bodily, visible, return of Jesus Christ in the glory of His Father to set up on the earth a kingdom in which He shall reign in righteousness and peace. Reference: Acts 1:11; Matt. 24:30; Rev. 20:4-6; Is. 9:6-7; Is. 11:2-5TonguesWe believe that all believers are to give attention to becoming spiritually mature in order to function in the body of Christ. The emphasis of Scripture for individuals is on the qualities of Christian maturity. For the corporate body of Christ, Scripture underscores the development of faith, hope, and love. Realizing that differences of opinion exist on the issue of tongues, for the sake of unity, We ask all who worship here to refrain from exercising tongues at any of our gatherings. DC Is...Simple...Our lives can be overwhelmingly complicated. The life of Christ is not. 2 Corinthians 2:1-5Reproducing...We believe a true disciple is a reproducing disciple and a healthy church is a reproducing church. Acts 1:8Discipling...Our momentum is fueled by intentional apprenticeship – all disciples investing their lives in the lives of others. Matthew 28:19-20Missional...Simply put, we are sent. God has intentionally sent us into our social networks and spheres of influence. Wherever we go, we are on mission. Isaiah 61:1Incarnational...The life of a true disciple is the life of Christ. By the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are bearers of Christ and his mission is our mission. Galatians 2:20Relational...We continually seek to build new relationships with pre-disciples so we can bring them into our lives and communities where Christ is glorified. John 4:7Communal...We live in community because we were created in the image of a communal God. We cannot effectively know God, function as the church, or reproduce disciples outside of Christ-led community. 1 Corinthians 12:12
